CURB APPEAL: Playground Edition
                                Process

STEP 1:
Whole Group: The teacher will engage students by showing the YouTube, (African school struggling with extreme lack and no playground) 
  Hard Lessons: Enjoying the game despite limited resources.
Discuss, generate/answer questions:
* list the needs of our playground                                      * determine our audience
* identify our limited/available resources                            * can we affect change                 
* to whom will we make our appeal                                    * making a plan

STEP 2:    Research First
Your teacher will formulate three groups:

SAFETY COUNCIL- You will research the sites below looking for standards that help make a playground safe. Record (5) standards on the safety data checklist.

LANDSCAPE DESIGN- You will research sites for landscape ideas for the playground.

Proposal Writers- You will watch the Persuasive PowerPoint below to learn effective
strategies for persuading a specific audience. (print one for each expert- Check Your Strategies)

Step 3: Expert groups will visit the playground to gather information. 
Safety Council- Use the safety checklist you created to assess the playground for hazards. Take pictures of each hazard you find for documentation.
Landscape Designers-  Measure the playground and structures/features for area, perimeter, 
(i.e., easements, structures, benches, gates, basketball court, etc.) Using grid paper, sketch the layout of the playground.
Proposal Writers- Take pictures of the playground layout to use as a reference in support of the Designer's sketches.
Step 4: (Whole Group/classroom) Expert teams will collaborate, share & compile the information they have gathered. (Example- Writers and Designers will share playground pictures and sketches) Their collaboration will provide the needed information for completing (rough draft) the Persuasive Graphic Organizer. All groups will add information.   
Step 5:  
Safety Council Landscape Designers- You will use the measurements and sketches to draw 
a map to scale. Remember you will want to make it large enough to present to your audience.(Teacher has needed materials- 1" sq. grid/chart paper-recommendation is 4'x6')

Proposal Writers- You will edit the Persuasive Graphic Organizer. Now, fill out the online Persuasive Map. Print a copy.

Step 6:
Safety & Landscape Designers- (completing the Map of the Upgraded Playground)

Proposal Writers-
You will create a PowerPoint. Using the Persuasive Map print out, create a 
PowerPoint slide for each detail of the graphic organizer. (*Note: All expert groups will participate in some capacity to create the PowerPoint, but the Proposal Writers are the experts for this component, and will solicit help from other groups as needed.

Step 7:
Presentation your final project/proposal to the administrators.
